Tips to Celebrate Father’s Day in a Meaningful Way

As the saying goes, “Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a Dad.” Studies have shown that when fathers are involved in their children’s lives, their kids display improved academic achievement, have higher self-esteem, have greater self-respect and are more likely to have stable, loving relationships of their own as they grow older.

Since strong, engaged fathers are the pillars of a healthy household, Father’s Day is the perfect time to let dear old Dad know just how much he means to the family. Below are five tips to help your kids celebrate Father’s Day in a meaningful way.

1) Go bird watching.

Bird watching is an excellent activity for fathers to engage in with their children. It allows children to go outside, get some fresh air and experience nature. It also teaches them patience. You really don’t need any special expertise or equipment to start. Just grab a pair of binoculars and a blanket and head over to the park. You can even go bird watching in your backyard. Make a list of how many birds you see and try to identify them.

2) Make Dad breakfast in bed.

Even the youngest child can help you prepare a wonderful meal to serve Dad on Father’s Day. Making breakfast together helps every child to feel involved and special. Plan ahead to determine which dish you’ll make and then delegate tasks. For example, if you’re making pancakes, one child can measure out the flour and another can whisk the batter. Your kids can use their creativity to pick flowers to accompany the meal or decorate napkins with hearts, drawings and loving messages to Dad.

3) Take a trip to the beach.

Feeling the sand between your toes and watching the tranquil ocean waves is a wonderful, inexpensive way for you and your kids to celebrate Father’s Day. Have your kids take turns going for a stroll on the beach alone with Dad. While Dad is off walking, you and the child who stays behind can write heartfelt messages in the sand for him. The kids can even build a sandcastle with their father. Beach memories are the best memories!

4) Have a backyard picnic.

It’s no secret that many men love to grill but for Father’s Day, give the man in your life the day off. Fill a picnic basket with Dad’s favorite foods and let the kids pick a few of their favorite snacks. Then head out back or to the nearest park with a blanket, plates and utensils. Make the day extra meaningful by creating a playlist of Dad’s favorite music and listening to the tunes on your smart device.

5) Have an indoor scavenger hunt.

For last year’s Father’s Day blog, we suggested some easy crafts you and the kids could make for Dad. After you’ve created one of those homemade gifts, you and your little ones can hide the present in the house and give Dad clues on where to find it. Your kids will have loads of fun watching their father try to locate his gift. They and Dad will feel extra special knowing the present was made with love from the heart.
