Most people have personal goals they set every January to be the best they can be – whether it’s weight loss, learning a new language or managing money better. But making resolutions as a family this new year can help strengthen your family unit and also be an excellent way to model goal-setting for your little ones.
Below are five resolutions you and your family can embrace in 2022.
1) Learn to unplug. Smart devices can enhance our lives but also be a big source of distractions. Resolve this year to unplug more often and spend quality time being actively engaged as a family. Plan one day a week where you put down the cell phones and tablets to enjoy a family game night or read a book together.
2) Eat healthier. Studies show that children who eat nutritious, well-balanced meals are able to stabilize their moods and maintain a healthy weight. Make a commitment as a family to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet, as well as steering clear of sugary snacks and beverages. Allow your kids to pick out one healthy snack they’d like to substitute for junk food.
3) Exercise! Children need exercise too. The winter months may limit the amount of time kids are able to spend outdoors, so making fitness fun is a great goal to set as a family. There are indoor activities you can do as a group to get your heart rate up, such as having a dance party or walking around the house after dinner. The goal is to incorporate movement into your daily schedule. Exercising as a group is a great way to hold everyone accountable.
4) Read together. Building literacy should always be a goal of parents to strengthen the minds of their young learners. There are many great benefits to reading with your child, such as bonding, improving listening skills and boosting their attention span. For your family resolution, schedule one day a month for a group reading activity and let a different person choose the book each time.
5) Do chores together. Cleaning the house can be boring and time-consuming, but when you engage the whole family in weekly tasks, it can be a fun and bonding experience. Assigning chores helps kids practice taking responsibility and gives them a sense of accomplishment. You can maintain a jar with chores written out so each child can select the task they’d like to complete. Even toddlers can join in with lightweight chores such as throwing paper in the wastebasket and picking up their toys.
