Ideas for Celebrating Mother’s Day with Your Young Child

On Mother’s Day, moms the world over are celebrated for their love, sacrifice and dedication to their families. Motherhood is a full-time job, but busy women don’t often have time to plan special activities with their kids.

This Mother’s Day, take the time to reconnect with your children and celebrate yourself with these five tips.

Make your favorite family recipe. Maybe your grandmother made the perfect orange pound cake or your dad is well-known for his peas and rice. Perhaps you are the chef in the family!

Mother’s Day is the perfect time to pass down beloved recipes to the younger generation and a wonderful opportunity to bond with your young child as you make these tasty treats.

Plant flowers. You don’t have to have a green thumb to grow flowers. The experience of planting with your child will be fun and rewarding, not to mention, you’ll have lovely Mother’s Day memories that keep blooming. Select a spot in your garden or backyard for your flowers. Grab a shovel and dig a hole. Drop the seeds in, cover them up, and water every few days.

Read a book together. Mother’s Day is the perfect time for bonding with your young child, and what better activity than reading a book together? Studies show that reading with your child promotes literacy development and improves vocabulary. Peekaboo Bedtime, Scarlet’s Web and The Secret Garden are classic books to read aloud with your little one.

Go through old photo albums. The pandemic changed our way of life and lockdown prevented us from visiting with loved ones. Looking at family photos with your young child provides an opportunity to keep your relative’s memory alive and also to point out special facts about that person. This Mother’s Day, revisit photo albums as a reminder of what’s important in life. Alternatively, you can download pictures of family members from social media, print them out and create a unique album.

Plan a picnic. You don’t have to go to the park to enjoy a picnic with your child. You can pack a basket of your favorite foods, spread a blanket in your backyard or on your living room floor and enjoy this special time on Mother’s Day. Your little one can help you by selecting the foods you will enjoy, such as blueberries, sandwiches, hardboiled eggs, popcorn and string cheese. You can make your picnic more fun by creating a playlist of you and your child’s favorite songs.
